“Suburb in carnival mood”

PARTY TIME: Colourful costumes, such as those worn at last year's event, are among the highlights of the Auckland International Carnival street parade which will take over the Glen Innes town centre later this year.
It’s official – Glen Innes is hosting the Auckland International Carnival this year.
The community is getting ready for the October 15 event, which is in its second year, and will highlight one of the east’s diverse cultural hubs.
The Auckland International Carnival focuses on giving back to children and communities through an event that brings Aucklanders together.
Glen Innes Business Association manager Gary Holmes says the carnival is expected to become a major fixture on Auckland’s event calendar.
“What community wouldn’t want to be a part of that? International examples show that it does really well for small communities like Glen Innes,” he says.
“It’s potentially a game changer for the area and it could put us on the map.
“We’re a melting pot of cultures and I think if we can get behind it as a community the Auckland International Carnival will be great.”
Mr Holmes says Glen Innes is well suited for the event.
“It has to be community based for it to be successful and for it to grow. Glen Innes is a good fit.”
The one-day festival offers visitors the opportunity to celebrate cultures, colour, and people that make Auckland unique.
Highlights include the street carnival parade showcasing costumes, ethnic rhythms, theatrical performances, dance and exotic food stalls in a global village. Home grown musicians and emerging new talent will entertain the crowds while young people are spoilt for choice in the designated youth hub and Kidzone.
